Newberg Man Arrested After Swat Team Deployed

Newberg, Oregon – Last night at approximately 8:50pm, officers from the Newberg-Dundee Police Department responded to a residence in Newberg on a call of a family disturbance. When the officers arrived they were informed that the disturbance actually occurred at 815 E 4th Street in Newberg.

During the investigation officers learned that the involved male and female are married and were having a verbal argument. During that verbal argument the male, identified as Randall Caley Cook (DOB 3-25-53), strangled his wife rendering her unconscious.

When the female regained consciousness she fled the residence to another family member’s home in Newberg. As she was leaving the house Randall Cook issued verbal threats toward her and any police that might try to interfere. As the female was leaving she observed the male gathering several firearms located in the residence.

Officers attempted to call into the residence where the domestic violence occurred but were not able to reach Randall Cook. Officers were informed that Randall Cook might be impaired and officers decided to attempt to contact him in the morning.

During the morning of January 8, officers were able to contact Randall by phone however communications were limited by Randall Cook. A search warrant was obtained for the residence and the Newberg-Dundee Police Department then requested assistance from the Oregon State Police SWAT Team.

At approximately 1:30 pm this afternoon the OSP SWAT team engaged Randall Cook at his residence. He briefly exited his residence and then attempted to retreat back inside. It was at this time less lethal options were deployed, including 40 mm and Taser. Randall Cook received minor injuries and was checked by medics before being lodged at the Yamhill County Jail with a security amount listed at $12,500.

Cook has been charged with the following:

  • Strangulation
  • Assault 4th Degree – Domestic
