Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into the cause of Thursday afternoon’s two-vehicle fatal traffic crash south of Junction City that resulted in the death of a 60-year old man and minor injuries to a second man. The victim’s name will be released Friday morning.
According to Trooper Cale Day, on February 9, 2012 at approximately 5:30 p.m. a Volkswagen Bug driven by a 60-year old Junction City man was northbound on Highway 99 just south of Meadowview Road near milepost 114 when it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a southbound 2000 Buick. The Volkswagen came to rest in the right southbound lane. The Buick came to rest in the ditch along the northbound lanes.
The Volkswagen driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Buick’s driver, Stephen W. Mcdermott, age 71, from Eugene, was transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend with minor injuries.
Both drivers were using safety restraints.
Highway 99 was closed about three hours with a detour established around the crash scene.
OSP troopers from the Springfield Area Command office are continuing the investigation.
Junction City Police Department, Junction City Fire Department, Eugene Fire Department, Lane Rural Fire & Rescue, and ODOT assisted at the scene.
