Albany, Ore. – In February 2012 the Albany Fire Department applied for a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant to hire six firefighters. We were notified that we have received that grant.
These six firefighter/EMT positions will replace three positions previously unfilled when they became vacant due to retirements and will also allow us to hire three additional firefighter/EMT’s. The grant funding will pay 100 percent of the salaries and benefits for two years.
The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grants (SAFER) was created to provide funding directly to fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations to help them increase the number of trained, “front line” firefighters available in their communities. The goal of SAFER is to enhance the local fire departments’ abilities to comply with staffing, response, and operational standards. The SAFER grant funds come from the federal government.
