Salem Announces Court Amnesty Program

Reduction in Fines available for Pre-2006 Court Cases

Salem, Ore. – The City of Salem Municipal Court announces the Fresh Start – License Restoration Program aimed at clearing delinquent accounts and restoring driving privileges. During the month of September, individuals who have outstanding traffic citations with the City of Salem Municipal Court, issued prior to December 31, 2005, have an opportunity to settle their cases without additional penalty.

Judge Jane Aiken explains, “By offering this program to defendants with cases from prior to 2006, the court recognizes that we did not have the tools and staff resources back then to aggressively pursue compliance; that offering a reduction in the amount owed upon payment in full on a lump sum balance is a prudent use of taxpayer resources, meets the purpose of the fine: accountability for having violated the traffic laws, and gives individuals the opportunity to come out of the shadows of non-compliance and get a get a fresh start with their driving privileges.”

This program gives these individuals an opportunity to resolve their cases beginning September 17, 2012 through October 15, 1012. During this timeframe, a 25% reduction is available for those who pay their fines in full, on qualifying cases. These individuals will also receive the appropriate forms to reinstate their driver’s license if it was suspended for their failure to pay their fine.

Judge Aiken says, “The Court understands that some individuals may not be able to take advantage of the Amnesty Program. Individuals who cannot meet the Amnesty Program criteria, should still contact the Court. The Court is still willing work with them. The Court will establish a means-tested re-payment plan to work toward restoration of driving privileges. The Court will extend a helping hand, if individuals show an earnest effort to repay outstanding fines.”

Individuals interested in participating in the program must contact AllianceOne collection agency at 800-456-8838 in the month of September.
