Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Saturday evening’s three vehicle fatal traffic crash that resulted in the death of an adult male on Highway 22W south of Highway 18 in heavy fog and icy conditions. The other two names are released in this update.
On January 19, 2013 at approximately 6:30 p.m., a 2003 Ford van driven by Marcos Antonio Luz, age 41, from Woodburn, was westbound on Highway 22W near Red Prairie Road when it traveled across the centerline and collided with an eastbound 2000 Toyota four-door driven by a 69-year old man. After impact, the Toyota came to rest off the highway in a ditch and the Ford van stopped in the westbound lane. Shortly after the first collision, a westbound 2012 Dodge pickup driven by Lonny S. Bryant, age 51, collided into the van sending the van off the highway into a ditch.
The Toyota’s driver, Clifford E. Fagaly, age 69, was pronounced deceased at the scene. His wife/passenger, Kerttu R. Fagaly, age 85, was critically injured and transported by ambulance to Salem Hospital. Both are from Silverton.
Antonio Luz was transported by ambulance to Salem Hospital with serious injuries.
Lonny Bryant and passenger Ruthann Bryant, age 49, both from Willamina, were transported by ambulance to Willamette Valley Medical Center in McMinnville with minor injuries.
OSP troopers from the McMinnville and Salem offices are investigating. Trooper Chad Drew is the lead investigator. Alcohol is being investigated as a possible contributing factor on the part of driver Antonio Luz. Safety restraint use information is not available at this time.
OSP is assisting by Police County Sheriff’s Office, Polk County Fire Rescue, Sheridan Fire District, West Valley Fire District, and ODOT. The highway was blocked in both directions for several hours.
