A single vehicle fatal crash on Interstate 5 near Brooks has resulted in the death of a 22-year old Canby man.  The crash occurred on May 19, 2012 at approximately 12:03 AM at milepost 265 northbound, which is approximately seven miles north of Salem.

Local Authors invited to Participate in Salem Public Library Event

Salem, Ore. – Area authors are invited to participate in Salem Public Library’s first-ever author fair on Saturday, June 23, 1-4 pm. This is an opportunity for authors to promote and sell their published works, meet local book lovers, and network with other authors. The event will take place in Anderson Rooms A & B at the Library’s main branch, 585 Liberty St. SE. In addition to providing space to display and sell books, authors will also have the opportunity to deliver five-minute “lightning talks” on why their book is a book worth reading.

Salem Receives Tree City USA Growth Award for 2011

Salem, Ore. – Salem has been a Tree City USA for 36 consecutive years. In 2011, the City went above and beyond the annual Tree City USA requirements and received a Tree City USA Growth Award. The Arbor Day Foundation recognized the City for significant achievements in the Planning and Management category. The City was awarded points for using a computerized system to assess the City’s potential tree canopy and for significantly improving an ordinance related to trees.

Straub Middle School Evacuated After Student Tampers With Fire System

Salem, Ore. – At approximately 1:30 PM today Salem Fire Department responded to a possible natural gas leak at 1900 Block of Wilmington Ave NW- Straub Middle School. Salem Engine 5 was the first arriving fire company they were informed by the school staff the smell was located on the lower level of the school. Fire crews were told a fire sprinkler had activated near the boys restroom. NW Natural Gas and Salem Electric was requested to respond and assist with the incident. The main natural gas supply was turned off to the building and fire crews entered the building with monitoring equipment to determine the source of the reported gas smell. Fire crew determine the smell was from the fire sprinkler water. Fire crew discovered one fire sprinkler head had activated in the boys restroom.

Sublimity Fire District Bond Measure

Sublimity, Ore. – The volunteers, staff and board of directors are very pleased with the election results. The fire district has always been focused on needs and not on “wants.” The result of this measure proves that the public has confidence in the district and how we utilize their tax dollars on an on-going basis. We asked to meet current and projected needs and the community supported this by passing this much needed bond measure.
